Begoña Pérez-Cabezas

Begoña Pérez-Cabezas is a member of the One Health Office at ICBAS – Institute of Medical and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, where she works at the interface of research, education and science communication within the One Health framework. Her work focuses on capacity building, knowledge transfer, and the development of educational, training and outreach activities that promote interdisciplinary collaboration across human, animal and environmental health.
She holds a degree in Biology (2007) and a PhD in Immunology (2011) from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain). Her previous research career was centred on host–pathogen interactions, with a particular focus on zoonotic and vector-borne protozoan diseases such as leishmaniasis and malaria. This work combined basic and translational research, including pre- clinical drug and vaccine testing, and was carried out in several Spanish and Portuguese research institutions, notably at ICBAS and i3S.
The ICBAS One Health Office develops initiatives to raise awareness of the relevance of the One Health approach within the academic community and society at large, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and joint research and professional practices to address current and emerging health challenges, including zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, water quality and environmental pollution. These initiatives include educational programmes for schools, scientific outreach activities aimed at engaging civil society, and the coordination of the annual One Health PhD Students Meeting at ICBAS, among others.
